PASADENA, Calif., May 18, 2006 -- The Theatre @ Boston Court will present two weekends of rehearsed readings of six dark and compelling new plays June 3 - 4 and 10 - 11, at Boston Court, 70 North Mentor Ave. (at Boston Court). Literary Managers Bryan Davidson and Tom Jacobson have chosen the plays with the help of Artistic Directors Jessica Kubzansky and Michael Michetti.
"Yellow Wallpaper" is a theatrical exploration of the classic horror story about a woman haunted by visions and a cure that may be worse than the affliction. Written by Davidson and directed by Larry Biederman, "Yellow Wallpaper" will be staged June 3 at 11 a.m.
"Sidhe" by Ann Noble tells the story of Louise, who rents the seedy flat above her Chicago bar to a strange, aloof Northern Irish couple on the run and becomes entangled in the horrifying events of their lives. Directed by Darin Anthony, "Sidhe" will be staged June 3 at 3 p.m.
In "Bleed Rail," author Mickey Birnbaum takes the audience on a high-speed, surreal journey through the dark heart of working class America. A debilitating slaughterhouse accident causes Ryan to rely upon the sage career advice of his roommate, a fast-food cashier. Directed by Kubzansky, "Bleed Rail" will be staged June 4 at noon.
"Lascivious Something" by Sheila Callaghan takes us back to 1980 and a remote vineyard on a Greek Isle, occupied by American ex-pat August and his young, pregnant wife. They're joined by a strange woman in a large-brimmed hat. Directed by Marya Mazor, "Lascivious Something" will be staged June 10 at 11 a.m.
"Gilgamesh," written and directed by Stephen Sachs, is the first staged version of an acclaimed new translation of the world's oldest poem, an epic of heroes and monsters, passion and heartbreak. "Gilgamesh" will play June 10 at 3 p.m.
In "Dark Play or Stories for Boys" by Carlos Murillo, Nick invents Rachel online to persuade Adam to meet him in the real world. But is his story explaining his scars yet another invention? "Dark Play," directed by Michetti, will be staged June 11 at noon.
This will be the second reading series at Boston Court for Murillo, whose play from the first series last year is part of the current season. The world premiere of "Unfinished American Highwayscape #9 & 32," directed by Kubzansky, plays July 29 through September 3.
"Six Pack" presents plays that are in keeping with Boston Court's mission statement, which urges its artists to fearlessly and passionately pursue their unique voice and vision. Play selection encompasses a wide variety of genres, with a special emphasis on nurturing playwrights and new play development, which are inherently theatrical, textually rich, and visually arresting.
The free readings are open to the public and reservations can be made by calling (626) 683-6883, ext. 210. The Theatre @ Boston Court is the non-profit company that programs the state-of-the-art 99-seat main stage theatre in the Boston Court performing arts complex.
