MUSIC AT THE COURT PRESENTS DER GOLEM: WIE ER IN DIE WELT KAM

(THE GOLEM: HOW HE CAME INTO THE WORLD)

WITH LIVE SCORE BY TOM PETERS

PASADENA, Calif., October 6, 2008 – Music at the Court at Boston Court Performing Arts Center presents a special Halloween weekend screening of the 1920 Expressionist classic "Der Golem: Wie Er in die Welt Kam" ("The Golem: How He Came into the World") with a digitally restored print and a live score employing improvisation and computer electronics by acclaimed contrabassist Tom Peters on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 8:00 PM.

The Golem (1920), tells the ancient Hebrew legend of a man of clay created by a Talmudic rabbi to save the Jewish people of the Prague ghetto from the tyrannical Rudolf II, and how this creation turns on his maker and the people he was created to save. The film features haunting images and film techniques that have influenced filmmakers for nearly 90 years.

Peters will be creating a live, improvised score using a bowed electric double bass and the latest in electronic effects processing to underline director Paul Wegener's nightmarish vision.

"The Golem is an amazingly complex and horrifying experience," says Peters, "but it's also surprisingly touching. This film is truly a masterpiece."

"The Golem" along with "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "Nosferatu," are considered among the greatest of the German expressionist silent horror films. Written, directed, and starring Paul Wegener, this version was digitally restored by the Cineteca del Comune di Bologna at the Laboratories of L'Immagine Ritrovata in 2002, and was co-financed by the LumiŽire Project. "The Golem" was painstakingly pieced back together from prints held by the Cineteca Italiana in Milan, the Filmmuseum in Munich, and the Gosfilmofund in Moscow.

Peters is a renowned double bass soloist who specializes in the performance of contemporary music. He is on the faculty of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach, and records for the Tiger Barb Records label. Peters may be heard on along with Music at the Court artist John Schneider on the new release, "John Cage: 26' 1.1499" for a String Player with 45' for a Speaker," works that Peters and Schneider performed at the Marjorie Branson Performance Space in 2006.
