LA STAGE ALLIANCE HONORS ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE AT 2005 OVATION AWARDS NOVEMBER 14

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 26, 2005 -- The 2005 LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards will be held Monday, Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m., at the Orpheum Theatre, 842 South Broadway in the downtown Los Angeles historic theatre district. Tickets are priced at $40, $80 and $150 and are available through Ticketmaster outlets (www.ticketmaster.com).

In addition to the competitive awards, the LASA Board of Governors will bestow awards on three special honorees: Luis Alfaro will receive the James A. Doolittle Award for Leadership in the Theatre; producer and director David Galligan will receive the Career Achievement Award; and Shakespeare Festival/LA will receive the Community Outreach Award.

Alfaro is known for his work in poetry, plays, short stories, performance and journalism. A Chicano MacArthur, Rockefeller and University of California Regents Scholar, he is the former Director of New Play Development at the Mark Taper Forum Theater where he produced the Taper, Too and New Work Festival seasons. Recent plays include "Electricidad," "Bitter Homes and Gardens," "LadyBird," and his newest solo performance, "No Holds Barrio."

For the past 21 years, Galligan has directed and co-produced the annual S.T.A.G.E. fundraisers for AIDS charities and he has helmed all of the S.T.A.G.E. Too benefits for The ActorsÕ Fund of America. He most recently directed "Like a Dog on Linoleum," which has played to standing room only audiences in three cities. Other recent work includes "Madly, In Love" at the Odyssey Theatre, "Rod McKuen in Concert" at Carnegie Hall and the new musical play "The Last of The Honky Tonk Angels" in Los Angeles.

Shakespeare Festival/LA, founded in 1984 by Ben Donenberg, is an integral part of the Los Angeles cultural landscape. From a youth employment program that hires young people challenged by severe economic circumstances to create and perform an adaptation of a Shakespeare play; to innovative curricula that provide teachers new ways to bring the words of Shakespeare to their classrooms; to the critically acclaimed professional performances of Shakespeare's plays offered free of charge, the Festival's programs have a positive impact on the artistic, academic and economic health of communities in the Southern California region.

The Ovation Awards, established in 1989, celebrate the artistic excellence of LA's theatres and theatre artists and their continuing contribution to the vibrant cultural scene. They are the only peer-judged theatre awards in Los Angeles. This season there were a record 409 productions submitted for Ovation consideration in 29 categories.

The 2005 Ovation Awards are sponsored by NSBN, LLP Certified Public Accountants and Business Consultants, Entertainment Lighting Services, The Los Angeles Times, Classical KUSC 91.5fm, Cinevative and American Web. The Director is Mark Seldis, the Producer is Terence McFarland and the Executive Producer is Larry Aldrich.

LA Stage Alliance is a non-profit association and service organization dedicated to building awareness, appreciation and support for the performing arts in Greater Los Angeles.
